Anuradhapura, situated in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, is among the oldest capitals on the island and served as the centre for Theravada Buddhism for many years. Due to the remains of an earlier Sri Lankan civilization found therein, UNESCO designated Anuradhapura a UNESCO Historic Site of World Significance under its original name of "Sacred City of Anuradhapura."
